The Great Park was the thing that was going to be great, eventually. Then 2026 arrived and rearranged the calendar. The U.S. Men's National Team chose Irvine as its home base for a World Cup. Olivia Rodrigo chose the Great Park to launch a brand new festival. And the Giant Wheel that has anchored Spectrum photos for a generation quietly came down and is coming back taller. If you live here, this is the summer to look up from the group text and actually plan a few weekends.
The Thesis, Stated Plainly
The interesting shift is not that Irvine got a few new restaurants. It is that Irvine has crossed from "commuter suburb with amenities" into a destination that other cities are now driving toward. The one to circle is August 29. Daisy Chain Fields, a new music festival founded by Olivia Rodrigo and produced by C3 Presents, will debut at the Great Park on August 29, 2026, with a lineup featuring Bikini Kill, Chappell Roan, Doechii, Garbage, KATSEYE, Mitski, Olivia Rodrigo, Santigold, and The Breeders, along with special guests Karen O, Sarah McLachlan, and Stevie Nicks. That is a festival that could have opened anywhere in the country. It opened here.
The Spectrum, Minus the Wait
If you have not been to Irvine Spectrum Center since spring, you already know the Giant Wheel came down. Here is what is replacing it.
A brand new, next-generation Wheel will be opening in Summer 2026, with increased height, enhanced comfort, and a refreshed lighting design. It has a new name too, the Spectrum SunWheel, and the operational upgrade is the part worth knowing before you take out-of-towners. The Spectrum SunWheel includes enhanced LED lighting, music inside the gondolas, three additional gondolas, increased rider capacity, and improved ride operations designed to reduce wait times. The number that matters, and the one you can actually feel on a July Saturday: peak wait times for the Spectrum SunWheel are expected to be approximately 45 minutes, compared to about 90 minutes on the former Giant Wheel. Cutting the peak line in half is not a marketing line. It is the difference between "let's do it" and "let's skip it."
Tickets run $10 for General Admission and $15 for the Spectrum Speed Pass, and each gondola can accommodate up to six passengers, which finally makes it a workable family ride rather than a pair-only novelty.
While you are there, the dumpling situation has changed. Din Tai Fung opened at Irvine Spectrum Center with a Feb. 6–March 2 soft opening, with dumplings meticulously hand-pleated with 18 folds by a cadre of chefs in the transparent kitchen. If you have been driving to South Coast Plaza for xiao long bao, you can stop. And if you want proof the Spectrum is leaning into evenings rather than just afternoons, Irvine Spectrum notes over 15 new arrivals to shop, dine, and play this season, including free Silent Discos on select Saturday nights and live bands in the courtyard.
Where Residents Are Actually Eating This Month
The new-restaurant list in Irvine tends to blur together. Here is the shortlist that is genuinely worth rerouting for.
Rise Bagels. Chef-Owner John Park is known for his stints at Toast Kitchen + Bakery and Tableau Kitchen and Bar, one of Orange Coast's Best New Restaurants in 2023. A Tableau alum making bagels is not a franchise story. It is a chef story.
Mr. Moto Pizza. A San Diego favorite has arrived in O.C., setting up the company's first local pizzeria in Irvine. Try the Piece of Art if you want the shorthand for the menu.
Handel's Ice Cream at the Spectrum. Generous portions and dozens of flavors, described by National Geographic as the world's best ice cream, from a brand that began in 1945 and opened its Spectrum location between Nordstrom and Target last year.
Everything else. The Yelp-tracked "hot and new" set this year has skewed heavily toward specialist Asian cooking, with names like Yonny, Gogi Nori, Etc Bar X Thaizakaya, Takoyaki Yamachan, Suren Persian cuisine, Thai All Day, KaDon Katsu Bar, Cheongdam Jokbal, Little Son, and XIBEI Eatery. If you have a category craving, Irvine now almost always has an answer inside a ten-minute drive.
The Best Thing About This Summer Is Free
The most under-discussed part of Irvine's summer is that a large chunk of it costs nothing. Summer in the City is a series featuring family-favorite activities, including Movies on the Lawn and Summer Concerts, throughout June, July, and August, and all Summer in the City events are free with no tickets or pre-registration required, seating first-come, first-served.
Two anchors to know:
- Movies on the Lawn at Hicks Canyon Community Park, an outdoor family movie night on the big screen. Food trucks available beginning at 6:30 p.m., movies begin after sunset, weather permitting.
- Summer Concerts at Mike Ward Community Park–Woodbridge, transformed into a live, outdoor venue featuring a variety of music genres, with concerts beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The concert series is worth mentioning to any friend who lives outside the city and thinks Irvine's cultural life ends at the mall. Then there is the long-running tradition, Symphony in the Cities, which brings thousands of people together to enjoy a variety of popular classics, pop tunes, and patriotic songs performed by Pacific Symphony at a local park each year.
One planning note. City of Irvine offices will have adjusted hours on July 3 and 4, and there will be no public fireworks display in the City of Irvine, including at the Great Park. If fireworks are the tradition your household refuses to skip, that is the one date you plan around, not toward.
The World Cup Is Practicing Down the Street
This one is easy to miss because it is not on a ticket. The City of Irvine and U.S. Soccer announced that the U.S. Men's National Team has selected the Great Park as its official Team Base Camp training site during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If you have a soccer-obsessed household member, the practical implication is that the same fields your kid plays on host national-team training this summer. The mayor's framing sums up the moment as well as any: "The City of Irvine and the Great Park continue to stand out as world-class destinations for residents and visitors alike."
The One to Watch After Labor Day
If summer is the setup, fall is the payoff. A development investment of over $1 billion is underway at the Great Park, with The Canopy, a new food and retail center, slated to open in late 2026, a 90,000-plus square-foot boutique hub in the park's Northwest region, near Great Park Live, offering a full day of entertainment for visitors. That is the moment when the Great Park stops being an event venue with a park attached and starts being a walkable district. For anyone weighing whether the recent Irvine construction has an end point, this is roughly the end point of the current phase.
