Halloween Week in La Cañada, Pasadena & the Foothill

By The Berns Team | October 26, 2026

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means trick-or-treat night and the weekend are one and the same. Even better, clocks fall back on Sunday morning, so you get a bonus hour of sleep to recover from the candy haul.

This is the time of year we love most about living here. Porches glow, the streets fill with tiny superheroes, and every neighborhood has its own tradition. Here's our guide to the best of Halloween week, from our backyard in La Cañada Flintridge to Old Pasadena and the towns around us.

All Week Long: Carved at Descanso Gardens

If you only do one thing this week, make it Carved. It's one of our family favorites, and it's right here in La Cañada Flintridge. Every night through Sunday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 10 p.m., Descanso Gardens glows with thousands of jack-o'-lanterns, giant hand-carved pumpkins and illuminated displays along the garden paths.

This year also brings new wire-figure sculptures by artist Alexander Reichstein and Halloween-night trick-or-treating on the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a stroller for the littles and grab a hot cocoa along the way. It's a cashless venue and popular nights sell out, so book your tickets ahead at descansogardens.org/carved.

In Old Pasadena, a few spooky experiences are also running right through Halloween, including The Last Séance at Gold Bug and the Bunker Experience escape rooms. Details at oldpasadena.org/halloween.

Friday, October 30: Get the Costumes Out Early

With so many events on Friday evening, you can warm up for the big night.

  • Trick or Treat Village, Crescenta Valley Park (4 to 7 p.m.): Family trick-or-treating at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.
  • Trunk or Treat, Downtown Arcadia (4 to 6:30 p.m.): Costumes, games and treats on Holly Avenue, hosted by the City of Arcadia.
  • Fall Fun Festival, San Gabriel (5 to 9 p.m.): A free evening in the Historic Mission District with trunk-or-treating, a costume contest, games, food trucks and a Haunted Zone for ages 12 and up. Pre-register for the contest and haunted zone at SanGabrielCity.com/fallfunfestival.
  • Día de Muertos, Pasadena (5 to 8 p.m.): The City's official observance at Villa Parke Community Center (363 E. Villa St.) with dance performances, arts and crafts, food and beautiful ofrendas.

Saturday, October 31: Halloween Day

Morning and afternoon

  • Sierra Madre Halloween Festival (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.): A free, family-friendly party at Memorial Park (222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.) with a pumpkin patch, face painting, a caricature artist, a photo booth, food booths, live music and trunk-or-treating on Hermosa Avenue.
  • Halloween Spooktacular & Trick-or-Treat Bash, Monrovia (3 to 6 p.m.): Free trick-or-treating in Old Town, activities at Library Park and a costume contest with categories for kids, adults, families and dogs. Note that several downtown streets close from 1 to 7 p.m.

Early evening

  • Old Pasadena Trick-or-Treat (4 to 8 p.m.): Costumed kids trick-or-treat store to store along Colorado Boulevard and the surrounding streets. Look for the orange Treat Stop signs in the windows, and check the Treat Stop map on the Old Pasadena website before you head out. Salt & Straw is offering costumed guests a festive scoop upgrade on Oct. 30 and 31 while supplies last, and Doggee Club is hosting a pet costume parade and contest.
  • Halloween Foodie and Treat Walking Tour, Old Pasadena (4 to 7:30 p.m.): A tasty way to see the district for the grown-ups.
  • The Montrose Halloween Spooktacular (5 to 7 p.m.): Merchants hand out candy along the 2200, 2300 and 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue, a perfect add-on to neighborhood trick-or-treating.

Evening

  • Spooktoberfest, South Pasadena (5:30 to 9:30 p.m.): The historic Masonic Lodge (1126 Fair Oaks Ave.) becomes a free haunted maze, with live DJs, carnival games, fortune tellers and food vendors outside. RSVPs are appreciated, and no time slot is required.
  • Halloween Bash at The Huntington (6 to 10 p.m., also Friday): An adults' night out in San Marino with botanical trivia, a haunted gothic wood, live DJs and aerial artists. Tickets include two drinks and are priced from $90 to $140.

And don't forget Carved at Descanso Gardens, glowing all night long.

A Few Tips for a Smooth Halloween

  • Add something reflective. Many of our foothill streets are dark after sunset. Glow sticks and reflective tape make costumes safer and cuter.
  • Check the details before you go. Street closures, wristbands and ticket requirements change. Confirm hours on each event's website.
  • Book the ticketed events now. Carved and the Huntington Bash tend to sell out on peak nights.
  • Plan for Sunday. Clocks fall back at 2 a.m. on Nov. 1, so enjoy the extra hour.
